Why Vegan Tacos are Winning 2019
Plant based and vegan diets have definitely moved to the forefront in recent years. Everyone from heart surgeons to celebs seem to be gushing over their new found love of eating plants. But in 2019 vegan Mexican food is really making a rise to the top of people’s “must eat” list. So what’s better than Taco Tuesday? Well, Vegan Taco Tuesday, DUH. Here are a few reasons why we think vegan tacos are winning 2019 so far.
There’s a Vegan Taco Diet Book
It may sound crazy, but the Vegan Taco Cleanse is a real thing. This semi satirical book boasts over 75 different recipes for vegan tacos. “The Taco Cleanse was created through many years of research by a group of dedicated Taco Scientists in Austin, Texas. Taking the seemingly simple and perfect concept of the Taco, this diet re-imagines it to fit every kind of lifestyle. The Taco Cleanse will bring all of your levels to new heights and increase your nutrimatter content a thousandfold.” Although their claims that the cleanse will help you grow a beard probably aren’t real, this diet is proof that vegan tacos are gaining in popularity.
Influencers Love Them
If you search the hashtag “#vegantacos” on Instagram or Facebook you will see thousands of posts (more than 100k to be exact) of mouthwatering tacos. A lot of these posts come from vegan and foodie influencers like Vegan Fat Kid, Vegans Baby and The Raw Boy. When influencers share things they love to their millions of followers they begin to start trends. One of those trends right now is veganism and vegan Mexican food, for sure. Unlike some other trends, we think plant powered tacos are here to stay.
Tradition is Changing
According to Vivia Glam Magazine and Livekindly more and more Mexicans are cutting animal products out of their diet. It seems as though at least 20% of young Mexicans identify as vegetarian or vegan. This shows that more and more people in younger generations care about issues like health, animal welfare and the environment. As more Mexicans begin to opt for plant based versions of their favorite staples, we will continue to see an uptick in vegan Mexican food around the world.
More Options
You know that song from Annie Get your Gun, “Anything you can do, I can do better”? Vegans have kind of reinvented it by claiming, “anything you can make we can make vegan better”. In major cities like LA, Vegas and NYC there are multiple vegan Mexican restaurants offering all kinds of vegan tacos. We’re not just talking tofu in tortillas here. Everything from plantains in mole and fried avocado to chimichurri tempeh. You name it and someone has made a vegan taco out of it. With that being said, when more options exist than more people will be willing to try them.
Now that you’ve heard all about why vegan tacos are taking over the universe in 2019, what’s your list of tacos you want to see veganized?
